Supreme Court Redefines Marriage
But Support Remains Strong for Marriage between One Man and One Woman
In a disappointing decision, the Supreme Court overrode millions of Americans who recently reaffirmed marriage as the union of a man and a woman and cast aside the understanding of marriage that has been embraced for millennia by diverse cultures and faiths across the globe.
The Court was asked to decide whether the people have the freedom to affirm marriage as the union of one man and one woman, or whether the Constitution requires that marriage be redefined in all 50 states. By ruling in favor of a court-imposed redefinition of marriage, the Court stripped Americans of our freedom to debate and decide marriage policy for ourselves.
The Big Picture
While the Supreme Court’s unfortunate decision means that the federal judiciary will force the states to make marriage something that it’s not, society’s discussion about the future of marriage isn’t over.
Alliance Defending Freedom remains committed to promoting the truth that marriage is the lifelong union of a man and a woman. Why? Because the truth about marriage ensures that more children will know and be raised by both their mother and their father—something that every kid deserves—and because a proper view of marriage helps to pull the economically disadvantaged out of poverty, giving hope to the marginalized and downtrodden.
Efforts to redefine marriage not only distort the truth about marriage, they also threaten religious freedom. People who believe in marriage as the union of one man and one woman are being targeted, their livelihoods are being threatened, and they are even being ordered to attend government-run "reeducation" programs all because they refuse to promote or participate in something that conflicts with their conscience.
But no one should be threatened or punished by the government for believing in the good of marriage. That is why we are committed to defending the freedom of all Americans to live according to those convictions.
All of us are now faced with a choice: continue to stand up for truth, for marriage, and for freedom in America—or surrender. Advocates seeking to redefine marriage have been relentless in recent years—now it’s our turn. What kind of a witness would we be and what message would we send if we betrayed our fundamental beliefs about marriage now?
Spreading the truth about marriage requires a movement of people committed to reminding our fellow Americans that marriage—the lifelong, faithful union of husband and wife—is what created and sustains our civilization and is necessary for the common good of future generations.
